Matthew W. Taylor

Matthew is a tenacious advocate for plaintiffs, specializing in complex investment, product liability, and class action litigation. He is dedicated to achieving meaningful redress for investors, consumers, and survivors of institutional abuse.
Matthew brings a unique analytical perspective to his practice, drawing on his previous career as a protein biochemist involved in HIV and cancer research. This rigorous scientific training allows him to master complex technical evidence. Matthew has experience in investor protection, professional liability, pharmaceutical & medical device product liability, and institutional abuse litigation. He is a frequent writer, speaker, and lecturer on securities litigation and class actions. Matthew writes a securities law column for Investment Executive.
Prior to joining Sotos, Matthew practiced at a leading plaintiff’s class action firm where his practice was devoted entirely to complex class action and multi-plaintiff litigation. Matthew has been counsel on multiple trials, including a common issues trial and various motions, including summary judgment, certification pursuant to the Class Proceedings Act, and leave to proceed under Part XXIII.1 of the Securities Act. He has appeared before the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and the Commercial List. He sits on the executive of the class action section of the Ontario Bar Association and is Practice Group Leader for The Advocates’ Society Class Actions Practice Group. Committed to giving back to the community, Matthew is a supervising lawyer at the Osgoode Hall Law School Investor Protection Clinic.
In his free time, Matthew enjoys spending time in nature, hiking, reading, and biking.
