David Sterns interviewed at Supreme Court of Canada

David Sterns speaks to the Canadian Bar Association’s National Magazine following an appeal that will decide when courts can render judgment in a case by summary judgment and without a full trial.

The appeal raises important questions about how to deal with the increasing costs and delays in our civil justice system. The CBA argued that judges who hear summary judgment motions should be given the tools necessary to allow justice to be delivered in a timely and cost-effective way.

David and Jennifer Pocock were an important part of the CBA’s counsel team. Our pro bono work on behalf of the CBA is part of Sotos LLP’s service to the profession and commitment to advancing timely and affordable justice.

Sotos LLP lawyers David Sterns and Jennifer Pocock assist in Supreme Court of Canada intervention

David and Jennifer are part of the Canadian Bar Association’s counsel team which will be intervening in the Supreme Court of Canada later this month. The case before the court will decide when courts may decide a complex case by way of summary judgment and when such cases should only be decided at a full trial.

Beyond that, the court will be asked to consider ways to make the civil justice system more affordable and timely for all litigants. “These are issues that all lawyers practicing before the courts should care deeply about,” says Mr. Sterns.

It is an honour to be part of a team representing the Canadian Bar Association in advocating for an improved civil justice system.
