IFA's 41st Annual Legal Symposium
The International Franchise Association will be holding its 41st Annual Legal Symposium in Washington, D.C. from May 11-13, 2008. John Sotos to chair a roundtable entitled "A Survey of Franchise Laws in Canada."

OBA Dinner Event
On May 29, 2008, the Ontario Bar Association's Joint Subcommittee on Franchising will host a dinner discussion on continuing developments in franchise disclosure. See registration details below.

Sotos LLP wins two landmark victories for privacy law

1. Alberta Privacy Commissioner Frank Work orders the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Police Service to stop collecting personal information on customers of pawnshop and second hand store dealers.
 
2. The Ontario Court of Appeal strikes provisions within a bylaw passed by the City of Oshawa allowing for the collection of sensitive personal information from customers of second hand stores and the electronic transmission of that information to a police database.

Contact “C” to stay on grocers’ shelves

Allan D.J. Dick was successful in obtaining an order which has the effect of allowing grocery stores to continue to sell products containing pseudoephedrine, such as the well known medication, Contact “C”. A notice published by the Ontario College of Pharmacists that would have required  such products to be sold in pharmacies was determined to be of no force and effect.
